Summary
Stein-Leventhal syndrome is an endocrine disorder characterised by hyperandrogenism, hirsutism, ovulatory dysfunction leading to infertility and menstrual irregularities, polycystic ovaries and obesity. Patients with this syndrome are at increased risk of developing diabetes and heart disease. Prevalence estimates vary between studies but the syndrome is generally thought to affect between 4 and 12% of women of reproductive age, thus this is not a rare disease. The aetiology remains unknown. *Author: Orphanet (October 2006)*.
