Trichomalacia

Summary
Initially described in Zürich by G. Miescher in 1942, this scalp's disease affected children's hair and was marked by occipital or parietal alopecia in ill-defined patches. Part of the follicles within the patch were obstructed by soft short broken hair, but the rest were normal. We now know that the defect is due to repeated trauma and pulling of the hair in trichotillomania (compulsive habit of pulling hair, eyelashes or brows). *Author: P. Reygagne, M.D. (May 2002)*
