Age-related macular degeneration is a late-onset, neurodegenerative disease of the eye characterized by progressive degeneration of photoreceptors/retinal pigment epithelial complex primarily in macular region of the retina, resulting in irreversible central vision loss. AMD is not a rare disease and is the major cause of vision loss in individuals 50 years or older in developed countries.
