Summary

Collagenous colitis is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease characterized clinically by chronic watery diarrhea and abdominal pain (affecting middle aged to elderly females), with a usually benign clinical course of spontaneous remission or good response to treatment along with normal colonoscopy findings and a biopsy demonstrating a broad subepithelial band of collagen (>10 mm in thickness) as well as intraepithelial lymphocytes and a chronic inflammatory infiltrate of lamina propria. Rarely, persistent diarrhea, colonic ulceration, toxic colitis or toxic megacolon have been reported. Together with lymphocytic colitis (see this term), it makes up the group of microscopic colitis (see this term).
